Definition of Curriculum Vitae (CV) – is an outline of a person's educational and professional history usually prepared for applications. Another name for a CV is a resume.
A CV is the most flexible and convenient way to make applications . It conveys your personal details in the way that presents you In the best possible light . A CV is a marketing document in which you are marketing something : yourself! You need to"sell" your skills, abilities, qualifications and experience to employers.

A CV should have -

  • Personal details
  • Education and qualifications
  • Work experience
  • Interest and achievements
  • Skills
  • References

Personal details : Normally these would be you name, address , date of dith, telephone number and email.

Education and qualifications : Your degree, subject and university, plus A leves and GCSEs, CBSEs or equivalents . Mention grades, unless poor!

Work experience : Use action words such as 'developed' 'planned' and 'organised'. Try to relate the skills to the job.

Interests and achievements : Keep this section short and to the point . As you grow older , your employment record will take precedence and interests will typically diminish greatly in length and importance.

Skills : The usual ones to mention are languages (good conversational English , french , basic Spanish), computing ( e.g. "good working knowledge of MS Access and Excel , plus basic wed page desing skills" and driving licence ("full current clean driving licence").

References : Normally two referees are sufficient : one academic (perhaps your tutor or a project supervisor), and one from an employer (perhaps your last part-time or summer job). You will also need a Covering Letter to accompany your CV.

Qualities of a Good CV

There is no single "correct" way to write and present a CV but the following General rules apply :

  • It is targeted on the specific jod or career area for which you are applying and brings out the relevant skills you have to offer.
  • It is carefully and clearly laid out.
  • It is informative but concise.
  • It is accurate in content, spelling and grammar.

Size of CV

A new graduate's CV should cover no More than two sides of A4 paper.

Carefully and clearly laid out - Not too Cramped but not whit large empty spaces either . Use bold and italic typefaces for headlines and important information.

Be concise - A CV is an appetizer and Should not give the raeder indigestion. Don't feel that you have to list every exam you have ever taken , or every activity you have to list ever been involved in - consider which are the most relevant and/or impressive.

Be positive – Put yourself over confidently and highlight your strong points. For example , when listing your A-Levels , put your grade first.

Be honest – Although a CV does allow you to omit details (such as supplementary in examination or failure ) which you would prefer the employer not to know about , you should never give inaccurate or misleading information.

  • Hybrid/Combined CV
  • Online CV

Reverse chronological CV : A Reverse chronological CV lists a candidate's job experiences in reverse chronological order , generally covering the previous 10 to 15 years. Position are listed with starting and ending dates. The reverse chronological CV format is most commonly used by those who are not professional CV writers.

Functional CV : A Functional CV lists work experience and skills sorted by skill area or job function. The functional CV is used to focus on skills that are specific to the types of position being sought. This format directly emphasizes specific professional capabilities and utilizes experiences summaries as it's primary means of communicating professional competency.

Hybrid/Combined CV : THE Hybrid/Combined CV balances the functional and chronological approaches. A CV organized this way typically leads with a functional list of job skills , followed by a chronological list of employers . The hybrid CV has a tendency to repeat itself and is , therefore, less widely used than the other two.

Online CV : The Internet has brought about a new age for the CV. As the search for employment has became more electronic , CV have followed suit. It's common for employers only two accept resumes electronically , either out of practically or preference.

Emailed CVs and Wed CVs
